Cities Of Mars: Cities Of Mars
From Gothenburg, Sweden we bring you Cities Of Mars, a progressive doom metal band that has been around for a few years now with three albums under their belts:
Temporal Rites (2017)
The Horologist (2017)
Cities Of Mars (2022)
Cities Of Mars is another fantastic, modern doom metal band and their self titled effort is loaded with superbly crafted metal featuring excellent lead vocals and riffs all over the place. The first track “Before The Storm” is a moody and atmospheric piece with hints of early Pink Floyd, especially the disparate guitar lines. Some of the song titles seem to hint the music might get a little heavier and that is precisely what you get with the ominously titled “Towering Graves (Osmos)” with its heavy slabs of slow plodding riffs and clear and distant vocals. I love the drum tone and when the synths are used it gives the sound a cool spacey effect. “The Prophet (Methusalem)” has an undercurrent of electronics simmering beneath the edgy guitar chords, big, bold, and heavy. The band add a few changeups to keep us listeners from getting too complacent. The pretty “Song Of A Distant Earth (Hathra)” features lovely acoustic guitar while “Dawn Of No Light (Chthon)” has the band surging with power and intensity, the guitar forging through the soundscape and the solo flavoured with Middle Eastern accents. Complex rhythmic structures, chugging riffs, moody interludes, and a heavy groove makes the progressive “The Dreaming Sky (Anur)” one of my personal favourites.
Having loved their last two efforts I can’t wait to hear what comes next for the Swedish rockers. Do yourself a favour and pick this one up. Highly recommended.
