Kentucky Green: Creatures of Bad Habits

The name of this Australian trio might suggest bluegrass or maybe even some Southern-fried rock. But the “green” in "Kentucky Green" likely stands for “weed" -- as this is a full-blown stoner-blues band in the vein of Black Sabbath, Kyuss, Buffalo and Sleep. Thick and roiling, the eight songs on the band’s second album demonstrate a firm grasp of the genre that will appeal to longtime stoner music fans. At the same time, the melodic and accessible instrumental “Cactus” (with a fat and scorching guitar solo) might help win over prickly listeners new to the genre. As with much music of this type, however, don’t listen to Creatures of Bad Habits expecting to be blown away by the vocal performances. Rather, it's all about the musicianship and passion for a sound and scene that increasingly deserves more attention -- not to mention a better moniker.
