Cellupica, Lorenzo: A Haunted House
Although he is involved with numerous projects and bands right across the progressive, fusion and jazz world, I’m not sure I’ve encountered pianist Lorenzo Cellupica before sampling this, his debut solo offering. Called A Haunted House, this fully instrumental, piano jazz album covers a lot of ground, all of which is traversed by Cellupica alone. Encompassing an impressive amount of moods and ideas along the way, this journey, through the life of what I’m guessing is the house, or indeed, place of worship, featured on the cover, never sits still.
With the energetic “Spider” dancing as the little beasty might upon a strand of its web before finding its graceful landing once more, you’re left in no doubt that this album can convey moods and atmospheres at will. “Eleventh Avenue” does likewise with a more structured jaunt, whereas an excellent arrangement of the Lennon & McCartney standard, “We Can Work It Out”, clearly illustrates the skills that have gone into making this collection of music as accomplished as it is.
Lorenzo Cellupica is a clearly talented and on occasion inspired, musician, composer and arranger and while I personally need a little more than just piano alone across a ten track album to keep me locked in, there’s no doubt that A Haunted House is a much more inviting place to reside in than that name may suggest.
