Ginocchio, Marie: Wonderland
Wonderland is the debut release from 19 year old pianist Marie Ginocchio, consisting of 9 impressive solo piano compositions. The musicianship here is stunning; Ginocchio without a doubt is a superb talent that is going places. The disc is dedicated to Chick Corea who inspired Ginocchio, and if I am not mistaken she did have an opportunity to attend his academy. From what I read, Chick’s The Mad Hatter was the inspiration for her to begin composing her own music. In addition, guitarist Frank Gambale is also thanked for his advice and encouragement, so she has some impressive musicians in her corner! The inspiration for the album and song titles appears to be from Alice In Wonderland. Let’s talk about the music!
It won’t take you long to be overwhelmed that this was recorded by a 19 year old. The songs have both sensitivity and attack, and you’ll wonder how someone so young has this kind of depth and maturity with their original music. “Cheshire Cat” displays some impressive technique, and all the while as she plays these intricate lines between her left and right hand, what comes out is truly melodic and beautiful. Not only is she an impressive musician, but also quite the artist, having designed the cover art for the CD. “The March Hare” is quite playful, with interesting rhythm patterns as do most of her songs. In contrast you have the sensitive “What If I Should Fall?” which is so delicate, soft, and beautiful. The closing track “In The Shadow Of The Queen” is the longest at 7+ minutes, and ends the CD with what sounds to me like one of the most complex pieces she has written. Her fingers seem to fly across the keyboard, wow.
It appears that Marie plans to expand by writing/recording in a band setting and adding electronic instruments to her keyboard work. This is exciting, and I hope she is successful, as a talent such as hers is not common. Marie has posted clips of her music on her YouTube channel which I highly encourage you to check out at the link below.
Talent such as Marie’s is quite rare, and I expect we will continue to hear about her for years to come. I wish her all the success as she moves forward with her music career.
