Moon Letters: Thank You From The Future
Moon Letters were formed in Seattle in 2016, and Thank You From The Future is the bands second full length release. Per the bands website, the lyrics explore personal growth, the future of the world, and sci-fi imaginations of the space age.
The opening “Sudden Sun” leaves no doubt that these guys have chops. On top of the music is a focus on vocals, both lead and backing which are done well. What seems to fall short are the songs themselves. There is a disjointed feeling to the tracks, rather than songs, it’s like the band write sections and then piece them together. I want to emphasize that the playing here is impressive, intricate parts are played well, but as a whole I am not drawn in. You hear people talk about hooks, and I always relate hooks to the sections of a song that stick with you. Thank You From The Future lacks that glue that makes the song come alive. “Moon River” is full of intricate sections of music, and impressive vocals, but again, where is the song? I do like that the band rocks, some heavy guitar and driving rhythms keep the songs moving, there are no sleepers here. “Isolation and Foreboding” has my favorite musical moments, as it transitions from lighter to heavier sections, and the interplay between the musicians is impressive. Both keyboardist John Allday and guitarist Dave Webb get plenty of solo time, and I appreciate the complexity of these songs, but, I would like to hear a more cohesive final product. Yes wrote some incredibly complex material, but you will never forget certain vocal lines or sections of music like “Long Distance Runaround”, that is what Moon Letters lacks.
