Lansdowne: Medicine

Releasing Blue Collar Man in 2011, you could be forgiven for thinking that Lansdowne had dispersed in the ensuing years and disappeared in the way that so many bands do (although I must admit that I missed these lads completely the first time round…). Apparently they’ve been plugging away on the live circuit ever since that debut and releasing singles and the like as the mood takes them. Medicine brings a lot of those previous works together and presents them as the band’s second album, with some of the standalone tracks and a few from Blue Collar Man offered up by way, I’d guess, of drawing a line under the past and setting off into the future.

In terms of approach the time period between debut and now pretty much encapsulates what Lansdowne are about, with the likes of Shinedown and Black Stone Cherry melded into something that this outfit can call their own. It all makes for a fun, but decidedly lightweight listen that feels just a little over familiar from the moment you first hear it. Nothing here ever urges you to hit the skip button, but then neither am I compelled to reach for play once more when the album has stopped spinning. Singer Jon Ricci has more than a passing similarity to Chris Robertson (Black Stone Cherry), which is no bad thing, but it does strip away much notion of originality from the likes of “Open Your Eyes”, which has that same kind of commercial rock feel that BSC do so well, while “Conquer The All” also fits into the same mould to good effect.

In the end Lansdowne sound like a whole host of forgettable fun - the kind of band you’d see as an opening act, rave about once they’d finished their set and then struggle to remember the name of by the time you’d gotten home. Medicine suffers the same fate, in that it’s fun while it’s playing, but after that……
