What do you get when you throw together Oeds Beydals (The Devils Blood/Molassess/Death Alley), Wout Kemkens (Shaking Godspeed/De Niemanders), Bob Hogenelst (Birth of Joy/Molassess) and Gerben Bielderman (Pauw), plus some influences like Pink Floyd, The Doors, as well as their previous bands? Well, their new band Iron Jinn and their self-titled release on Stickman Records. This is a REALLY different sounding brand of psychedelic rock, never too heavy, yet consistently haunting, with jangly, weaving guitars, intricate drumming, and dreamy vocals that at times border on chilling. Upon first listen, you'd almost say this was occult rock, except lyrically that doesn't really fit, but the ambience of this one isn't that far removed. Tracks like the lilting "Soft Healers" or the serpentine "Winding World" sets the stage for the rest of the album, which takes you on twists & turns throughout its 9 tracks. "Truth Is Your Dagger" has a certain sense of danger to it like those classic early Doors albums, and the searing slide guitar is well done, and "Lick It or Kick It" has that trippy, psychedelic vibe heard on early Pink Floyd, Soft Machine, or Gong records. Closer "Cage Rage" finishes things off with 15-minutes of epic, psychedelic sounds, the first half featuring vocals and frantic rhythms and the back-half loaded with eerie, sitar-like drones and ominous wind noises...creepy stuff!
To be honest, Iron Jinn took a few listens for me to fully appreciate, but now I'm really digging on the varied sounds here and the bands take on psychedelic music. This isn't stoner, biker, metal, or doom, but something entirely different, and really satisfying.
