Synowiec, Andrew: Fun
You may not know him by name, but it is likely you have heard his guitar playing somewhere along the line. Grammy nominated credits, star session guitarist, has recorded with the likes of The Who, Pink, and Donna Summer to name just a few, Andrew Synowiec has the licks and the songs to reel you in. Fun is due out in September, but I was lucky to get my hands on a copy, and guitar lovers should truly enjoy the blending of styles and great playing to be found here. “Lead Boots” is a great opener with a ton of energy, and I am reminded at time of the Dregs (Steve Morse). His band does a great job supporting him, but I have to say that keyboardist Carey Frank (Tedeschi Trucks) is the secret weapon here, his Hammond Organ slashes and burns throughout, killer! Rounding out the quartet is bassist Jorgen Carlsson (Govt Mule) and drummer Pete Korpela (Josh Groban). “Salvation Mountain” has a cool guitar intro that sticks in my head, and I love the lead lines over the top. The little harmony guitar part adds a nice depth, and that gorgeous Hammond bubbles up for a terrific solo. This one has a lot of energy for a studio track, which is always nice, it doesn’t sound stiff or overproduced. A studio musician needs to be able to play a number of styles, and these are showcased here. The clean tones of “Late To The Party” show off a bluesy/country flavor, but he does rip a bit, and again the organ of Frank gets a chance to shine. “Gone Too Soon” mellows things out, allowing the Hammond and Synowiec’s tasty licks to work together. A great lick runs through “Mississippi Leg Hound” and the band grooves, and might be my favorite track as it just conveys so much energy.
Synowiec has the chops, but I think the focus here is on instrumental guitar music that can have an impact on you. Good melodies, tasty playing, energy and interplay are the keys to what makes this so good. “Over Easy” is another bluesy rocker that gets under your skin and will have your head bobbing. “Dreamland” is a moody closer, and let’s me enjoy that guitar playing, great tone, phrasing and note selection from Andrew throughout. It’s good to know that you can still find great instrumental guitar music being made, make sure this one doesn’t slip by you, and be prepared for Fun!
