Garcia, Vincen: Ventura
It continually amazes me the amount of quality new music that is out there. Many of us remain stuck in the past (I’m guilty too) and don’t expand our horizons. Well, let me tell you, as comforting as it is to listen to those beloved records from your past, don’t let these gems slip past you. Vincen Garcia is a Spanish bassist with an active Instagram account featuring plenty of clips displaying his skills and technique. I’m immediately struck by his playing on track 3 “Aprieta”, a catchy song with amazing runs between the bass and horns. The monster funk groove continues on “Expresso”, but pay attention as the transition into this song is seemless, an amazing one/two punch. A tasteful guitar solo adds so much to this track, and leads into a more atmospheric section while Garcia continues to pump out amazing riffs. “Interludio” is a beautiful yet somber short bass solo spot. The only down moment for me is the rap track “Serendipia”, it seems quite out of place among the others. The mellow “Hangover” features more terrific guitar, there’s something about wailing over a laid back track that gives me chills when done well. “Alt-F4” brings you right back into the funkiness, and honestly, these tracks are where the albums true strengths lie. “Berlin” sneaks up on you, but is a very powerful track when it ramps up. Thankfully, there is no let down as the closing “Too Much” is a funk feast.
I wish I was able to find the credits, but alas, I don’t have a hardcopy of the CD, and there is very little information to be found. Take my word, Garcia is impressive as both a musician and songwriter. If you love funky bass put to some great tunes, this CD is for you.
