Brazil's all-female thrash/death metal act Nervosa are back with their latest platter of neck-snapping heavy metal for Napalm Records, titled Jailbreak. 2021's Perpetual Chaos was a surprise hit for the band during the height of the pandemic, and drew lots of eyes & ears to the lovely ladies' brand of ferocious thrash metal, and they've taken that sound once step further on the cleaner, more refined production style of Jailbreak. Don't get me wrong, this latest album is still plenty brutal, but there's a glossier and more powerful sheen to the production this time around, as songs like "Suffocare", "Endless Ambition", "Kill or Die", and "Nail the Coffin" clearly exemplify. The riffs are razor sharp and crushing, the soloing is frenzied and acrobatic, the drums pulverizing, and the vocals of Prika Amaral are venomous. Does that sound like the formula for Arch Enemy as well? Well, yeah, pretty much, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, as this band take that and blend it with classic German styled thrash elements ala Sodom, Kreator, Destruction. I really like what the ladies have done here, as there are lots of tasty and melodic twin guitar parts to be savored, and "Seed of Death", as menacing as it is, is also one of the most musical things the band has done to date. And that title track....wow, completely ripping from start to finish. Thrash legend Gary Holt even drops in a jaw dropping solo on the manic "When the Truth is a Lie".
If you don't mind extreme vocals with your blazing thrash metal, there's lots to like here on Jailbreak. Prika Amaral and Helena Kotina are a dynamite guitar team, and there is a wealth of six-string mayhem on this record. It might not be the most original album you will hear this year, but it's a really good one.
