Playing what his website calls “the new wave of Southern rock and soul music,” Sun King Rising -- aka John Blangero, along with a crack group of studio musicians and backup singers -- delivers exactly what it promises. If you dig the organic rootsiness of Americana music, the vivid storytelling of country music, and the hookiness of pop and rock songs, Signs & Wonders will be a worthy addition to your listening library.
Blangero sounds like Billy Joel circa An Innocent Man on the raucous opener “Bitter Waters Sweetened” and the grooving “No. 6 Magnolia Ave.” Other songs boast more of a bluesy New Orleans vibe (“Buried in the Blues Again” and “Low Wine and Cruel Rain”), and a track like “Lanterns on the Levee” proves to be just as haunting and compelling as its title.
These songs deliver jazzy piano, big horn arrangements, redemptive lyrics and an overall feel-good vibe that we need now more than ever.
