Now a few albums into their career, Swedish doom outfit Moon Coven have certainly hit it out of the park on their latest release for Ripple Music, Sun King. Nine songs dripping with crushing fuzz, taking a cue from not only Black Sabbath's Master of Reality, but also the epic sounds of Cathedral's The Ethereal Mirror, Sun King works on every level, from the mountains of never-ending riffs, the herculean grooves, and the Ozzy styled hi-pitched vocals. Start anywhere on this album and you'll find a doom/stoner metal gem, from the creepy "Behold the Serpent", to the massive "Seeing Stone" to the crushing title track...this one's a beast folks. Listen to that fuzzy bass and swirling riff of "Below the Black Grow", the feedback-soaked masher "Gilded Apple", and the pure doom-laden headbanging fun of closer "The Lost Colour"...doom fans, you are in for a treat.
Ultimately, Sun King is just one of those albums you need to hear for yourself and experience the awesome might of these riffs. Great stuff from start to finish, and once again, Sweden is where it's at these days for retro hard rock & metal!
