Devine King: The Devine King Project, Vol. 1

I am continually amazed me how much great new music is out there, and folks, allow me recommend the Devine King Project. Guitarist Simon King is the composer of this excellent instrumental ensemble and shares billing with bassist Scott Devine. Although there are chops galore here, this is a collection of well written, memorable songs. I love the guitar / sax (David Binney) combo; it’s such a great sound. A few names you may recognize are Gergo Borlai (drums) and Scott Kinsey (keyboards), and that’s more than enough to convince you to give this a go. If you are looking for high energy, you have come to the right place. “Game Theory” is a strong opener, with sneaky quick sax and guitar lines, and a heavy main riff. “Silent Delineation” features an amazing sax solo, and Gergo Borlai raises the intensity to a fevered pitch at the close of the track. “Glass Ceiling” mellows out the proceedings with melodic bass playing from Devine, and might contain my favorite guitar solo from King, perfect note selection and phrasing. More spectacular guitar is on display during “Scuttle Fish”, and a great backing groove makes this a standout. A little breakdown allows some sax to sneak into the spotlight too. Speaking of groove and great melody, “Electron Game” has it all, and it’s an absolute blowout jam at the end, stunning playing from everyone. That’s the stuff that I could listen to over and over without tiring of it. I love the closer “Lost Polos”; at times it’s very open and loose, while other sections feature intricate guitar and sax lines, a fun ending to this disc.

Top notch musicianship, great songs, and energy from start to finish are what you’ll get over the 51 minutes of music, and this is a contender for top releases of 2023, it’s that good!
