Mojo magazine called Claire Hamill “probably the best singer you’ve never heard,” and -- at least for this writer, that might be true. The veteran British singer whose recording career dates back to 1971 has collaborated with the likes of Steve Howe and Wishbone Ash, she has been a member of the Yes tribute band Fragile, and her record labels have included Voiceprint and Esoteric.
Hamill’s latest album, A Pocket Full of Love Songs, delivers more like a backpack or even a trunkful of love songs. All 11 tracks on this collection, inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic, evolve around finding love, losing love, being in love and hoping for love. While her friendly voice delivers, the songs are anchored by Kevin Jones -- who played just about all of the instruments, as well as produced, arranged and recorded the album. Meanwhile, Hamill plays a Low D Whistle on "I'll Wait for Winter," lending the song a Blackmore’s Night vibe.
For the most part, though, these songs percolate with pleasant adult album alternative sounds with twinges of country, folk and pop. And that’s certainly okay, as these songs make for perfect Sunday-morning or lazy weekday-afternoon listening. They are love songs, but they’re not mushy or treacly or skip-worthy. Instead, let this one play through, luxuriating in its warmth and intimacy. Then keep these songs in your own pocket for when you need them most.
