The German heavy metal machine known as Primal Fear are back with their latest release, Code Red, out now on Atomic Fire Records. No real surprises, no changing of the formula, just 11 new rock solid power metal anthems as only Primal Fear can deliver. Led as always by potent frontman Ralf Scheepers, the line-up also features Mat Sinner (bass, vocals), Michael Ehre (drums), and the three-guitar army of Tom Naumann, Magnus Karlsson, and Alex Beyrodt. As Ralf himself explained to me recently, when the band goes into the studio these days, they assign one of the guitar players the task of playing the rhythm guitars for the entire album, and then all three contribute the solos. For this album, Tom handles the riffage, and as you would expect, loads of crunch-o-rama to be found across gems like "Another Hero", "Bring That Noise", "Cancel Culture", and "The World Is On Fire". Toss in a couple of expected melodic numbers like "Forever" and "Their Gods Have Failed", and the mandatory metal cliche' ripper in "Steelmeter", and you have a very familiar sounding Primal Fear album, but as always, one that his ultimately quite satisfying. Scheepers sounds great, the riffs are crankin', the solos are blazing, and the rhythms are rock solid.
Sometimes, 'just what you'd expect' is all you really need. Job well done as always guys!
