Sweden's Domkraft return with their fourth full-length studio album, Sonic Moons, a seven track album of booming, psychedelic stoner metal, sludge, doom, and space rock. With four of the songs exceeding 6-minutes in length, you know you are going to be in for a wild ride with these Swedes, and they don't disappoint one bit, starting with the ominous sounds of opener "Whispers", which brings up images of Hawkwind, Mastodon, The Ocean, and Yob, complete with massive riffs and waves of trippy effects. "Stellar Winds" is fast paced stoner metal, featuring a great riff and manic drumming, and the crushing "Magnetism" takes the listener to a headbanging trip to worlds unknown, gargantuan riffs and scalding wah-wah solos flying from every direction. For the doom fans, they serve up "Slowburner" (perfect song title actually!) as well as the bottom heavy monster "Downpour", which has some of the heaviest riffs on the album. Speaking of bottom end, "Black Moon Rising" is a complete masher, screaming vocals saddling up next to monstrous guitar & bass thunder, the wah-wah solos stabbing through the miasma, and the near 10-minute closer "The Big Chill" blends psych, space rock, and stoner for a cool retro vibe.
This was my first experience with Domkraft, and it certainly won't be the last. Sonic Moons is heavy, heavy, trippy stuff, and comes highly recommended. Once again Scandinavia is where it's happening.
