Sergeant Thunderhoof: This Sceptered Veil

UK heavy rock act Sergeant Thunderhoof returns with their latest platter of crushing sounds, titled This Sceptered Veil for Pale Wizard Records. Straddling the fine line between stoner rock, heavy metal, psych, good old-fashioned hard rock, and doom, Sergeant Thunderhoof presents nine new tracks here littered with plenty of heft, haunting atmosphere, and raw emotion. The opener "You've Stolen the Words" starts things off in fine fashion, first assaulting the listener with massive riffs and pounding drums, before at the mid-way point turning into an eerie The Doors styled slice of psychedelia before the Crush-meets-Black Sabbath-meets-Soundgarden riff barrage takes things out in fine fashion. "Devil's Daughter" bumps and grinds like any solid stoner anthem should, and "Absolute Blue" is a dreary, melancholy dripping hard rocker, chock full of tasty guitars and plenty of atmosphere, as well as excellent lead vocals from Dan Flitcroft. "Foreigner" tips the scales at 10-minutes, and it's another riff fest for Mark Sayer, a savage doom-laden crusher that also sees a myriad of vocal styles from Flitcroft. "King Beyond the Gates" take the band as close to traditional metal as they get, and the epic two-part closer "Avon & Avalon" takes the listener through nearly 20 minutes of atmospheric and psychedelic doom.

This Sceptered Veil is a terrific achievement for this talented UK band, and those into the more atmospheric & psych influenced side of doom/stoner would be well advised to seek this one out.
