Here's another winner from the fine folks at Heavy Psych Sounds Records, the second album from US heavy rock act Kadabra, Umbra. Following up on their fine 2021 release Ultra, Umbra features a can't-miss formula; blend heavy, doom-laden riffs with Hammond organ, pounding drums, loads of creepy atmosphere, and alluring vocals. Tracks like "High Priestess", "Midnight Hour", and "The Serpent" instantly bring to mind acts like Uriah Heep, Atomic Rooster, Black Sabbath, Big Elf, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, and Ghost. "The Devil" is a crushing dirge, the riffs menacing, the organ swirling, and Garrett Zanol's psychedelic vocal style is a wonderful addition to this intriguing mix of sounds. "Battle of Avalon" starts as pure prog, but then the pulverizing riffs kick in and it's psychedelic doom the rest of the way. Toss in the creepy sounds of the crusher "Mountain Tamer", and you have the makings of one heavy, heavy album that satisfies both your doom cravings as well as run, retro heavy rock sounds of yesteryear.
Along with guitarist/vocalist Zanol, the rest of the band is made up of bassist Ian Nelson, drummer Chase Howard, and keyboard player Blake Braley. Kadabra is a serious band for serious listeners...don't miss this one.
