What do you get when you blend the early, doom-laden sound of Soundgarden with the angst rock of Rage Against the Machine? Problem something like Australia's Astrodeath, and their latest release for Heavy Psych Sounds Records, Vol. II. Basically, a duo featuring singer/guitarist Tim Lancken and drummer Yoshi Hausler, Astrodeath creates an ominous wall of sound here that crushes all in its wake and takes no prisoners. Tracks like "Permafrost" and "Leviathan Rising" have all the heft of very early Soundgarden, but Lancken's vocals sound eerily close to Zack de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine, giving their sounds a heavy but energetic flair. "Ceremonial Blood" pulses, oozes, and mashes, the riffs of "Neo Nephilim" take you back to bluesy '80s hard rock, "Invasion" is dark, heavy, and ominous, and the bombastic grooves of "The End" are undeniable in their intensity.
The band also has a self-titled release from 2019 that is worth investigating as well, but this latest is a dark and heavy gem that should appeal to any fan of psychedelic stoner rock, sludge, and doom.
