Devil’s Witches: In All Her Forms

Hailing from Glasgow, Scotland, I bring you Devil’s Witches, an intriguing project led by James Abilene with a little help from his friends. The first release titled Velvet Magic came in 2017 and was followed by a couple EPs and a split release. This brings us to the most recent album from 2022 titled In All Her Forms.

As for the style of music, doom is at the album’s core, but this is not anywhere close to being one dimensional as progressive, psychedelic, and folk are all touched upon. This interesting combination can be heard throughout the album beginning with the short album opening “L’image” with its ominous soundscape, psychedelic swirls of guitar chords, and weird vocalizations and when you put it all together it’s a very cool space rock sound. Fuzzed out distorted riffs form the intriguingly titled “Successive Slidings of Pleasure”. The sound is monstrous with its wall of fuzz and eerie and distant vocals. Psychedelic undertones inform the heavy space-doom sound, and a prevailing moodiness is unveiled as slow piano notes satisfyingly bring the song to a close. On “Blood of the Witch”, guitar arpeggios and jangly chords with breathy Floyd-like lead vocals give another nod to beautiful psychedelics. With “Pussycat in a Woman’s Skin”, floating keyboards and acoustic guitar drift in and out, a kind of ethereal jam, creating a softer groove with heavier bass deepening the low end. Folks, this is far more than your average doom album, that is for sure. “Space Age Sorceress” is all thundering fuzzed out riffs with laid back vocals. The spaced-out swirling guitar and solo in the instrumental break is just awesome. The mellow and mood laden “Hunting Dracul” is another album highlight.

In All Her Forms exudes excellence from the first note to the last, making this one of the best releases from 2022. Very highly recommended!
