Tempest: Live On The Air - The Radio Sessions 1992 - 2018
Tempest is a Celtic folk/progressive rock band hailing from the San Francisco Bay area and have been around almost four decades. Many of you are likely familiar with the band but here is a brief history. Tempest is led by Lief Sorbye (lead singer, electric mandolin) who after leaving his native Norway, toured the U.S. folk circuit for many years before forming the band. The band has had a number of different musicians, all of them helping shape their high energy Celtic rock music
The current members of the band are:
Lief Sorbye (lead vocals, mandolin)
Adolfo Lazo (drums)
Lee Corbie-Wells (fiddle)
Nikolay Georgiev (guitars)
Hugh Caley (bass, vocals)
On this album, titled Live On The Air, released in 2020, Sorbye has selected tracks from various radio performances spanning almost twenty years. As with all their albums you know what you are going to get, which may be good or bad depending on your musical DNA. Mostly up-tempo, energetic, Celtic flavoured folk rock that, if nothing else, will have your feet tapping. The tricky acoustic guitar in the pure Gypsy folk of “Raggle Taggle Gypsy, the searing electric guitar in “Toss The Feathers”, and the pretty mandolin and exceptional fiddle work in “One For The Fiddler” are definite high points. The acoustic guitar in “Heather On The Moor” is both lovely and intricate and meshes nicely with the heavier riffs and in “The Serb”, the sorrowful melody certainly hits a nerve.
Tight musicianship, dynamic playing, and just a whole lot of fun. One day I would love to catch the band in a live setting, to experience all that energy in the moment. Recommended.
