Lock up the women and children, grab your axe from atop the fireplace and brace yourself to face the berserkers- Grand Magus has arrived in your town!
The Wolf's Return harkens us back to the days of classic metal. This sophomore release by the Swedish trio is filled with thunderous drums, heavy riffs and the ungodly vocals of JB, who flawlessly rips through tales of sword & sorcery and Norse mythology. Throughout the 11 tracks that make up this disc, Grand Magus puts the POWER in power trio. They seem to have fused together their own hybrid of doom meets power metal, although they still let slip some of their influences on occasion.
The most surprising element of this album is that, despite it's heaviness, it remains very melodic. Each track is a classic metal gem in the tradition of the metal gods of yesteryear, who knew how to keep the melody at the heart of their incessant riffing. The Wolf's Return's only shortcoming is it's brevity. Just as we're getting really pumped up it comes to a screeching halt. At least we can't accuse the band of feeding us any filler. This album is one huge slab of meat, seared around the edges and bloody in the center.
