Instrumental psychedelic stoner doom...that's what you get on the latest from French act Qilin, titled Parasomnia. My guess is the band name is French for 'killin', but that's just a guess, though certainly much of the music contained on Parasomnia is pretty 'killin' to be honest. These guys go from intoxicating Yawning Man, My Sleeping Karma, and Colour Haze styled psychedelic rock, to bursts of bombastic, doom laden pummeling, oftentimes within the confines of each song. "Lethean Dreams" and "Tayir Alfdiniq" both do a great job at this, keeping the listener on their toes in anticipation of what will come next, and just when you think they are lulling you into a hazy trance, the big, massive riffing and stabbing lead guitar shatters that illusion quickly. "On Migoi's Trail" has tons of groove, "Hundred Handed Wards" is crushingly heavy, and for a doom track without vocals, it works just fine, and closer "Boros" is 9-minutes of atmospheric, apocalyptic doom riffing and melodic & spacey lead guitar work, supported by excellent drumming. The psychedic interlude in the middle adds a hazy element to this otherwise monstrous track that provides the right amount of levity.
Those who like their heavy, spacey, and psychedelic music sans vocals, this one is a clear winner. They also have another album from 2020 called Petrichor, which is also worth seeking out.
