Influenced by the likes of early Def Leppard and Bon Jovi, mid-period Bonfire and Dokken, and a bunch of bands currently on the Frontiers Music roster, Canada’s Rainlight makes solid melodic hard rock that deserves a wider audience. On the quartet’s independently released second album, Insomnia, tracks like “Moonlight,” “Shine” and the ballad “Let the Rain” reveal a knack for catchy melodies, smart riffs and a real sense of what fans of this genre are looking for in contemporary bands.
That said, the band produced and mixed Insomnia on its own, and the record’s deep bottom end buries some of the lead vocals just enough to distract -- if you let it. However, the far better option is to simply revel in these 10 tracks and be grateful that newer bands still feel compelled to make music like this.
Also worth noting is Insomnia’s outstanding packaging, especially for an indie release. The retro logo, the colorful high-tech artwork and the eight-page booklet are designed to impress. Well done.
