By the time the third album from Damn Fine Coffee -- an offshoot of Land of Chocolate -- dropped in 2020, the original guitar-less trio was down to a single member. John Buzby wrote, performed, produced and engineered all nine tracks on For Richmond or Poorer, and that means this is a different Damn Fine Coffee than the trio that recorded 2011’s Slave to the Grind and 2017’s Sudden Fall From Grace. As a result, the vocal harmonies that defined so much of the band’s previous sound don’t pop as much here (although Buzby does a solid job harmonizing with himself, especially on “If Only,” one of this album's strongest tracks). The quirkiness, odd time signatures, intricate melodies, edgy arrangements and Spock’s Beard-meets-Ben Folds Five influences, however, remain very much intact. In other words, this is still Damn Fine Coffee, but with a different taste.
