Brian Tarquin & Heavy Friends: Beyond The Warrior’s Eyes
Heavy Friends indeed! Beyond The Warrior’s Eyes is filled to the brim with guest appearances by some amazing players. There is plenty of soloing to feast upon, the mighty Jean-Luc Ponty kicks things off, and the list goes on, greats such as Eric Johnson, Robben Ford, and Steve Morse to name a few, start licking your chops folks. One of my personal favorites Chris Poland is featured on “Behind The Iron Curtain”, and I’m always up for hearing something from him. Tarquin himself is an Emmy winning guitarist, sound engineer, and record producer. He has composed music for such TV shows as MTV’s Road Rules, Real World among many others. He’s extremely prolific, with a number of solo albums in various styles.
There are some very strong performances, all you have to do is look at that guest list and you should not be surprised. After a number of listens, as much as I enjoyed the upfront soloing, I would like to have heard more variation in the compositions. Check out the endings, most of them just seem to end, no real build up or variation, it’s odd, almost as if I am listening to a jam track with these great players ripping over the top. “Faith & Hope” which features Steve Morse is another favorite in this compilation. This is a fun listen, but I wish the composing was more developed and varied, it feels like every song ends the same, run a line, hit that last note and stop.
Beyond The Warrior’s Eyes mission is to support the charity, Hope For The Warriors, who provide medical care, mental health counseling, professional training and education, physical conditioning, and transition services for wounded, ill, and injured Marines and Navy members. A very worthy cause, and if you’d like to support it, see Brian’s webpage below.
