This Is The Magic Mixture: This Is The Magic Mixture

There is something about the psychedelic music of the late ‘60s as bands and artists were given the opportunity to follow their muse and let their creativity shine. It is even more special when in 2024 you discover something that had remained unearthed (at least to me), and then the magic happens. I am talking about the London psychedelic rock/pop band This Is The Magic Mixture.

The self-titled debut and only album from the band was originally released in 1968 on Saga Records. There have been reissues to follow including this most recent on the Morgan Blue Town label. The band’s sound is formed around the massive organ sounds courtesy of Stan Curtis and Terry Thomas’ excellent rhythm and lead guitar. Thomas also has an excellent voice to go along with his superb axe slinging.

The disc begins with the catchy “(I’m So) Sad”, a delicious psychedelic rock tune built around Thomas’ blistering lead guitar and pronounced organ lines from Curtis. The band’s instrumental prowess shines throughout the album including the slow bending psychedelic guitar in “Urge To Leave”, the darker “Slowly The Day” with its slow burning guitar solo, and the rhythmically dynamic “New Man” where the guitar and organ shine. “Hey Little Girl” is a nice little psychedelic pop song, while “It’s Alright By Me” has a more basement rock vibe going on. The chugging fast paced grooves in “When I Was Young” make this one another ear pleasing adventure.

Twelve short and concise tracks ensure a brief but oh so enjoyable listen. This should be a no-brainer for fans of ‘60s psychedelic rock. Highly recommended!
