Thumos: Atlantis
One of the most prolific outfits in the instrumental progressive post-metal landscape, US act Thumos return with the three song but thirty minute EP, Atlantis. What’s most impressive about what this band do is not just the atmospheric, heady sounds they create but that they’ve sought to hang these round the framework of great civilisations from history or mythology, giving all of their releases a cohesiveness and identity right from the off. Atlantis is no different, the darting, daring guitars and drum excursions to be found in “Timaeus” completely believable from the very first moment you hear them. Packed with atmosphere and scope, what can in the wrong hands be quite a limiting attack, here becomes a launchpad into worlds otherwise untouched.
“Critias” continues the journey, adding a frantic but controlled edge that keeps you fully engaged, yet slightly unsettled, whereas “Hermocrates” - the longest track on show - reveals a willingness to pull things right back in and work within a more intimate and nuanced situation before then reestablishing a broader attack that feels much more wide-sweeping. Admittedly, the closing section that comes after a short period of silence is more ambient noise and almost unintelligible voices than it is music, and while heady and swirling, it isn’t the most ear-snagging way to close out this otherwise impressive beast.
At the risk of repeating what I’ve stated in previous reviews for this outfit, Thumos are quickly becoming one of the go to acts within the progressive post-metal sphere. If it’s a scene that interests you in any way, this is where you should be.
