Yabuki, Taku: Marvel (EP)

If you are a viewer of 4Fusion Friday, you are familiar with keyboardist Taku Yabuki from his Modern World Symphony albums we’ve discussed on the show. An outstanding musician/composer who brings in some incredible musicians the likes of Marco Minnemann, Gianluca Ferro and Marco Sfogli to play on this 4 song EP. The title track features some amazing piano, as you would expect, intricate unison lines, and guest Yas Nomura is on both bass and guitar. Clocking in just under five minutes, how does he write such cohesive yet varied material? “Kopanitsaneous� keeps pace with the opener, wonderful piano that blends seamlessly with the guitar and driving rhythm section. At about the 2 minute mark an amazing piano motif is stunning with the band's energy is at full tilt. Then, before you know it a gorgeous piano melody at about the 2:45 just slips in before heading back to high-voltage territory. “Fifth Element� again teases you with a pretty melody that soon morphs into heavier territory with Sfogli adding his tasty guitar work. This music shows that the piano can stand tall with heavy music, it works so well. The closing “Ignition� rocks hard, and Gianluca Ferro rips, what a player. As is typical, these songs weave in and out of the changes seamlessly, I’m always amazed at how well-arranged these songs are, and for the complexity of the music, nothing sounds forced or out of place.

I continue to marvel (sorry, I had to) at Yabuki’s talent as both a musician and composer. I can’t wait for his next full-length release, and in the meantime, this little snack will hopefully tide his fans over.
