Salvatori, Michael: Waiting for Autumn

A few years ago, the band Apocalypse released The Castle, which Steven Reid and I have reviewed for SoT. That album was originally recorded in 1976 but didn’t see the light of day until 2022. One of the main figures in Apocalypse was Michael Salvatori. In 1982, he went on to release a solo album, Waiting for Autumn, on vinyl with a very limited press run. It was mastered for CD in 2001 and re-issued in 2022 on the heels of the Apocalypse release. It was Salvatori’s last rock album. He has since gone to compose music for commercials, jingles, and video games.

I like Waiting for Autumn. Or I should say that I like about two-thirds of it. There are some beautiful pastoral prog songs that remind me of Bröselmaschine, Anthony Phillips, and more recently White Willow. The closer, “Epilogue,” is a great tune, as is the title track. But 1982 is definitely stamped on this album in places, for instance with “When I Look in Your Eyes” and “A Matter of Time.” These tracks feature dated synth sounds and it seems that Salvatori is trying to rock out in a way that just doesn’t fit with some of the other songs.

I’m glad that Salvatori has reached back into his archives to make both this album and the Apocalypse album available. I prefer the latter, but there are some fine moments on Waiting for Autumn also. If you are willing to skip past a few tracks, it’s worth a shot.
