Patte, Indrek: IN

IN is the fourth solo album from Estonian singer and keyboard player Indrek Patte, a frontman also known for his time in bands such as Ruja and Linnu Tee. Operating in the world of symphonic prog, Patte has brought together a skilled group of musicians for this album, Mathieh Spaetar (Frank Carducci) on guitar, Vladislav Reinfeldt on bass and Andrus Lillepea on drums.

The overall approach of the album is sumptuous, a vintage edge given to a contemporary sounding set of songs that still mainly pull their influences from days of old. With Patte possessing a loosely John Wetton like tone to his vocals and some of the rhythmical patterns clearly nodding to Gentle Giant, things are brought a little further forward with flecks of IQ and maybe even latter day Kansas added in here and there. Admittedly, opening with the instrumental - titled “The Opening� - isn’t necessarily the most obvious way to introduce IN, the most restrained piece on show then giving way to the energetic, bright burst of “Are You In�, and put basically, the answer is yes, I sure am! Darting, lively and with great interplay between the keys and guitars - both shine throughout the whole album - it’s difficult not to quickly get caught up in the clever songwriting, an aspect reinforced quite magnificently by the closing, near sixteen minutes of “The Lord Of Miracles�, which for me is this album’s crowning glory. That said, what comes in between never once dips, “Walking With You� quickly moving through the gears and with an excellent vocal from Patte, whereas the push and pull of “Twisted Reality� and its Gentle Giant like structure offers a clever change of pace.

With a decidedly Christian slant to nearly all the lyrics across the album, there is a possibility that not everyone will connect with the themes being explored. However, anyone put off by that aspect will be missing out on a really strong, vintage prog excursion that is also clever enough to be able to hook in an audience that maybe prefers a more modern approach.
