Sundrifter: An Earlier Time

Boston, Massachusetts stoner rock band Sundrifter is back with their third long player titled An Earlier Time. This is excellent news as I was mighty impressed with their 2018 sophomore album Visitations.

In the band are:
Craig Peura (vocals and guitar)
Paul Gaughran (bass)
Patrick Queenan (drums)

Folks, this is some of the heaviest stoner rock I have heard in quite some time. This is a power trio in the truest sense of the word. The drums pound while the guitar provides an aural onslaught of razor-edged riffs and distorted walls of sound. “Limitless” kicks off the disc with a heavy drum beat and heavily distorted guitar complemented by Peura’s clean and robust vocals. A chaotic barrage of heaviness begins “Space Exploration” complete with soaring vocals and more than a tinge of ‘90s alternative rock ala Soundgarden and/or Alice In Chains. It is both heavy and melodic, so you get the best of both worlds. With “Nuclear Sacrifice”, the guitars form an immense wall of distortion and fuzz with the lead vocals sounding somewhat distant, soaring all the while against the backdrop of chugging metal riffs and mountains of distortion. Such a cool sound! “Begin Again” is a real rocker with fiery guitar soloing right out of the gate, and as the tempo increases with abandoned fury the vocalist lays down his melodic lines, including stellar backing vocals. This has to be one of the best songs on the disc! The same can be said with the addictive “Want You Home”, where Craig’s vocals are off the charts good.

There have been a number of excellent stoner rock albums these past few years and An Earlier Time is up there among the best, at least that I have heard. Easily recommended!

A Small Stone Records’ release.
