Multi-instrumentalist Randy Rico calls his lyrics-free songs “tone poems,” which is fitting. Secret Garden blooms with lush keyboards, soaring guitar solos, strategic use of percussion and the overwhelming sense of being sonically transported to a better place--a safe, secure and beautiful sonic station you’ll want to escape to as often as you can.
I’m pretty sure Rico plays everything on this album; his Bandcamp page is not overly informative. And what the man lacks in song-titling creativity--“One,” “Two,” “Three” and so on, all the way up to “Thirty”--he makes up for with a seemingly endless sense of melodic responsibility that pulses through every piece on this album. Tracks range in length from 1:37 to 4:48, and Rico changes the musical pacing throughout to keep listeners engaged.
I’ll admit I was frustrated by the lack of details I could find online about this guy, but I’m thrilled to now know Randy Rico’s music exists.
