It's been a while since we last heard from North Carolina's bluesy heavy rock/stoner/doom outfit Lie Heavy, the band fronted by former Corrosion of Conformity vocalist Karl Agell, but they are back with a new platter of heaviness from Heavy Psych Sounds Records, Burn to the Moon. Along with guitarist Graham Fry, bassist TR Gwynne, and drummer Jeff 'JD' Dennis, the band has put together 12 new tracks for Burn to the Moon that should please any fan who has followed Agell all these years. Hard-hitting tracks like "The Long March", "Nothing to Steal", "Lie Heavy", "In the Shadow", and the killer title track draw that fine line between doom/stoner and good old fashioned '70s bluesy heavy rock, whole "Drag the World" has a fun, almost punky vibe along with a catchy sing-along chorus. "When the Universe Cries" has a Motorhead intensity to it, and "Chunkadelic" is full of glorious 'chunk-n-grind' riffs for any fan of classic UFO and Thin Lizzy. "Unbeliever" kicks all sorts of ass, and the frantic "Diabolik" again has a certain punk edge to it with the rumbling drums, gang vocals, and insistent guitar riffs. Closer "End of the World" sounds a little like Wino's great band The Obsessed, and the more I think about it, that's a vibe that permeates much of Burn to the Moon, which isn't necessarily a bad thing considering how much I dig that band. Good stuff overall, and easy to recommend.
