Here's a new signing to Heavy Psych Sounds Records, the doom/stoner/psych/occult metal duo calling themselves Saltpig, and this is their debut self-titled release. The band are Fabio Alessandrini on drums (ex-Annihilator) and Mitch Davis on guitars, vocals, bass, and other assorted musical devices (L.A. Guns, Billy Squier, Sunbomb, and others). This is one heavy, noisy, angry, and heavy psychedelic album, kicking off with the crushing bombast of "Satan's War", a relentless track where the drums bash your skull in as the monstrous guitar riffs, bass, and weird noises assault your inner being. "Demon" is more traditional heavy blues/acid rock ala Blue Cheer, the layers of fuzz thick, the leads slicing and Davis' vocal dripping with effects, the overall effect not that far removed from Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, but possibly heavier. "Burning Water" is a complete fuzz-monster, taking biker metal to levels not heard in quite some time, the guitar riffs are so damn heavy, while "When You Were Dead" sees Davis sounding like Jim Morrison as if he just clawed his way up from his grave...this is heavy, deadly doom. Psych fans will love the trippy "Burn the Witch", complete with some massive sounding fuzz bass, and the epic "1950" closes out the show, dripping with fuzz, feedback, and one monstrous riff, crashing drum blast, and wailing vocal after another. Basically, "1950" is Saltpig's descent into madness...will you take the plunge with them?
Those who love the heavier end of doom/stoner, like Conan, Bongzilla, and the like, will find much to sink their teeth into here. Saltpig has arrived!
