Korpiklaani: Rankarumpu

On a recent episode of Sea of Tranquillity's UK Connection our esteemed leader, Mr Pardo named and shamed Korpiklaani as one of the bands which he should liked but somehow, just doesn't. Apparently, all their material sounds the same and actually, in a very real sense, he's probably got a point. They're one of the bands who have carved out a distinctive niche for themselves and have possibly settled into a comfortable place with their audience which probably has remained relatively consistent over the years.

I like Korpiklaani, I've seen them live a few times both headlining and supporting and have always enjoyed their work but have seldom actually dashed out to buy their wares. Rankarumpu is probably not going to change that but, coming in at a brisk 43 minutes long it doesn't outlast its welcome with things being nicely set up by the breezy "Kotomaa" whilst the title track is a triumph of concise songwriting and playing. There's a nice balance between the faster, dancier tracks such as the infectious "Nouse" and the slightly slower but still groovy ones. Folk instruments (accordions especially) and call and response choruses abound and if you haven't managed to meet Korpiklaani's acquaintance previously, this is probably as good a place as anywhere given the nice, full, warm modern production and, as I say, swift running time.
