Weiss, Daniel: The Vortex

A Berklee College of Music graduate, Weiss’ second solo album The Vortex released on June 21st is a welcome addition to my collection. Joined by keyboardist Yaniv Taubenhouse, no time is wasted kicking the door down on the opening “Pyramids”. Sax is added to the mix courtesy of Eyal Aizic, and unison lines abound between the players. Each musician shines during their solos, but as you listen it is the songwriting that makes the connection with the listener. I love the ending where everyone cuts loose and creates a powerful climax. Weiss has good tone, and it’s not overly saturated, although a little hair is used when called for, and that’s perfect. The opening of “Telepathx” is complex and memorable. The bass and drums are driving hard while the lead instruments swirl about. The song mellows out as Taubenhouse plays some beautiful piano, and then Weiss pops in with one of his best solos on the album. Honestly, you can tell this is intricate, but it is so easy to listen and enjoy. I need to mention my favorite “Freedom Jazz Dance”. The only track not written by Weiss (Eddie Harris), a gritty intricate number, it has a bluesy flavor at times, especially the organ section.

Weiss should definitely get attention for this release, he’s a tasteful player and writer. In addition, he has a high social media presence with his guitar tips and online guitar courses. Seek this one out, for guitar enthusiasts, you won’t be disappointed. Weiss offers the listener the complete package of great playing and songwriting, with a knack for making the complex seem effortless. This will definitely be one of my summer jams!
