Recently I had the pleasure of reviewing New Jersey’s Third Of Never and their second album Downrising which is excellent. Now we bring you their third album released in 2017 titled Austerity. Like Downrising, the band continue their expertly crafted upbeat power pop with nods to ‘70s classic rock ala The Who and Neil Young. The bands’ love of punk rock came through on Downrising and with Austerity it is even more pronounced. We are not talking hardcore punk, but more in line with Early Clash and The Jam. So, you have all these varied influences and what you get is a completely infectious slice of rock music beginning with the melodic earworm power pop that is “Kidnapped Information”. This one has plenty of attitude and the riffs are catchy as hell. “Dig The View” is another melodic highlight as the band reaches for power pop perfection. The passionate “Run Silent Run Deep” is filled with blistering guitar with lead vocals reminding one of Roger Daltry. The title track recalls ‘70s Neil Young and Crazy Horse with its edgy guitar solo and thrashing riffs. A sense of urgency is revealed in the hard driving “506”, while the album ending “Shanty Town” has a western wistful feel, a sort of moody Americana-like ballad. Another excellent track.
My only complaint is the album’s brevity at around twenty-nine minutes. These eight tracks are so tasty I just wanted a few more to dig into. Still, Austerity is another fine album from the band, a power pop tour de force!
