Dawson, Jon: Misophonia
Misophonia is “a strong dislike or hatred for a specific sound.”
This is the title of the third solo album from Jon Dawson, best known for his work under the moniker Third Of Never. On Misophonia, released in 2020, Dawson is responsible for everything, from synths to guitar to electronics. Having reviewed two releases from his main band, the sound on Misophonia is a completely different beast. Almost an antithesis of his main band if you will.
Dawson started working on the album during the Austerity recording sessions. He gathered various field recordings and synthesized/drone sounds with the intent of making one continuous track. Although there are fifteen separate tracks listed, the album plays like one continuous listen with each track flowing into the next.
Regarding the title Misophonia, it is interesting to think about its meaning when listening to the album. Dawson takes an experimental and avant-garde approach and has made a rather difficult album to understand. Drones, synthesizers, and a variety of field recordings (birds chirping, children’s voices, footsteps, etc) are expertly crafted together. His disparate and improvised guitar lines work well, solidifying the edgy and ambient soundscapes. Reviewing individual tracks is difficult as the album needs to be listened to as one 45 minute session. I recommend listening on headphones to get all the nuance and moods this album has to offer.
For fans of avant-garde and ambient music everywhere.
