Sorcia: Lost Season

Dear reader, if you like your music mean and heavy, please continue to read. The band is Sorcia, based out of the Snoqualmie Valley, Seattle, Washington. They became a fully realized band in 2018 and released their self-titled debut EP in 2019. And then the pandemic hit, and while those were dark days for the world, the band used a considerable amount of creative energy to write not one but two albums: their second EP titled Death By Design and their debut full length Lost Season.

Heavy is the word for Lost Season as the band play an intense brand of sludgy, stoner rock/metal. The riffs ooze distortion as can be heard on the first track “Miss Ann Thrope” beginning with feedback and heavily distorted guitar riffs. The male vocals take a clean, laid-back approach, but in the chorus the second vocalist makes a huge impact with powerful near growls. This dichotomy of sound further adds to their varied approach. The varying tempo changes and ever-changing guitar riffs will further add to your listening pleasure. I dig how the band continuously vary the amounts of distortion and fuzz. “An Axe Named Otis” begins with a massive barrage of guitar and crashing drums with growling vocals. Following a moment when the band allow the distorted feedback to breathe, the darkly lit heaviness continues its unbridled assault, and includes some cool call and response vocals. The groove heavy hard rocker “Faded Dune” is all grimy riffs embedded in a doomy soundscape complete with mysterious vocals shrouded in haze while “Dusty” continues the band's ominous sound with trippy psychedelic inspired vocals and mesmerizing guitar lines where the soloing expands into trippier realms.

Another superb release in the desert rock genre. I cannot wait to hear what the band comes up with next.
