Ribozyme: Celestial Low

Here is another new find for me. The band is Ribozyme, hailing from Bergen, Norway. These guys are veterans having formed all the way back in 1998 and have eight full length albums to their credit including their most recent titled Celestial Low. There have been a few lineup changes over the years before settling on the current players:

Cato Olaisen (drums)
Bård Kristinson (bass)
Kjartan Ericson (guitar, vocals)
Thomas Lønnheim (guitar)

The band blends alternative elements into their catchy brand of hard rock. The main attraction here are the layered riffs thick and heavy and the catchy lead vocals, usually slightly back in the mix. The riff heavy “Newly Defeated” where distortion reigns supreme and the catchy vocals supply the hooks, is a fine first track. “Bloodworks” begins with a massive head banging riff before settling down into catchy alternative rock. I was reminded of ‘90s grunge with the excellent “Rapidly Changed” and its ear worm quality riffs and vocals. The uplifting “Order To The Turmoil” is built on layers of guitar with moody elements underneath along with a rousing chorus, and the title track offers more excellent riff laden hard rock. “Square” ends the disc with moodier soundscapes, pulsating rhythms, and its heavy eruption of riffs. Another fine track.

This has been a refreshing listening experience, knowing there are still bands out there keeping heavy rock alive and well. Recommended.

An Apollon Records’ release.
