Meer: Wheels Within Wheels

Meer, a Norwegian eight-piece pop-prog band, has crafted a marvelous feat with their upcoming album Wheels Within Wheels, set to release on August 23, 2024, via Karisma Records. The band is comprised of Johanne Margrethe Kippersund (vocals), Knut Kippersund (vocals), Eivind Strømstad (guitar), Åsa Ree (violin), Ingvild Nordstoga (viola), Ole Gjøstøl (keyboards), Morten Strypet (bass), and Mats Lillehaug (drums).

From the opening notes of the single "Chain of Changes", it's clear that this is a beautiful and exquisite musical work. The band's ability to blend progressive rock song structures with pop-like melodies and arrangements creates a unique sound, a mixture of orchestral pop, classical music and progressive rock that will appeal to both prog enthusiasts and more conventional listeners.

Lead vocalist Johanne Margrethe's fresh, folky, emotional, and honest vocal style captivates the listener, while her brother Knut's male vocals add a perfect balance of kindness and sharpness. The piano-driven moments and varied array of instruments create a rich and complex sound, reminiscent of influences like Big Big Train, Caligonaut, Yes, Anathema, Starcastle, A-Ha, Peter Gabriel, Florence and The Machine, Kate Bush, and Eurythmics.

Standout tracks include the opener song (and single) "Chain of Changes", the hard-hitting "Behave", the spectacular melodic "Come to Light", the haunting "Mother", and "Something In The Water". This album is a modern pop-prog gem that will undoubtedly make the "top albums of the year lists" for many. Meer's ability to blend different influences into a unique sound makes Wheels Within Wheels an album easy to digest, but at the same time one that will still delivers new details and experiences with every spin… a must-listen for 2024… cheers!
