Mythosphere: Pathological

Out of the ashes of Beelzefuzz (have not herd their stuff), formed the heavy metal band Mythosphere. Two of the four members can also be heard in Pale Divine and another was the original guitarist in progressive metal giants Fates Warning. Quite a pedigree for sure.

The band members are:
Dana Ortt (Pale Divine, ex-Beelzefuzz) - guitar, lead vocals
Victor Arduini (ex-Fates Warning) - lead guitar
Ron “FeZZy” McGinnis III (Admiral Browning) - bass
Darin McCloskey (Pale Divine, ex-Beelzefuzz) - drums

Pathological is a full-blown metal album, but with lots of atmosphere and mood, with psychedelic and doomy undertones. The guitar work and lead vocals are highlights throughout the disc’s relatively short running time of thirty-five minutes. But as they say, quality trumps quantity every time. Lyrically, the band tackles the divisive times in which we live, and the importance of connectedness and community. Quite a thoughtful and intelligent message.

The album begins with the up-tempo “Ashen Throne” and its layers of sound, a little psychedelic, before the razor-edged guitar riffs knife through the soundscape and the emotive lead vocals take hold. Nice guitar work throughout and the vocals are excellent, with a hooky chorus to reel in the listener. “King’s Call To Arms” is a little slower in tempo with a pervading moody atmosphere as well as doomy edged riffs. The substantial groove and guitar solo give this one plenty of heft. On “For No Other Eye”, Middle Eastern guitar flavours collide with distorted crunch and tricky tempo changes making this another stellar sounding track. The title track might be my favourite of the bunch with its scorching lead guitar, massively chunky riffs, and the soaringly powerful voice of Ortt. The band transition nicely into calmer parts, never forgetting their moodier side.

That’s half the album, the other half is just as good making Pathological one of my favourite metal albums of 2022. If you missed it then, get it now. Highly recommended!
