King Llama: Fata Implexis
LA Based instrumental outfit King Llama has released their second album Fata Implexis (fate intertwined) that blends the vibe of a jam band with the chops of progressive rock, and a fun spirit. My suggestion would be to check out the 11-minute “Sir Issac” which showcases everything the band can do. Using the word jam here is a bit misleading, as the music is sophisticated and well composed. I love the unison playing, and of course plenty of guitar to dig my teeth into. The first track “Lora Ky” has a choppy (in a good way) reggae feel, and I dig the wah wah. “Hamilton” exudes that fun spirit I mentioned above, with all those tricky little lines you’ll come to love. The music is varied throughout, and guitar lovers have plenty of moments to enjoy. The vibrant music keeps your attention with plenty of changes in mood and tempo to keep it interesting.
The band consists of guitarist-songwriter Ryan T. Baily, drummer Luis Briones. Rounding out the band are a number of guest musicians; bassist Anthony Crawford (Allan Holdsworth), Keyboardist Dominique Xavier Taplin (Toto, Ghost Note), Percussionist Nate Werth (Snarky Puppy), and a special guest appearance from bassist Percy Jones (Brand X) on the closing track “Vita et Mors”. In addition, the album was produced by Grammy Award Winning Dennis MacKay (Return to Forever, David Bowie, Stanley Clarke). Make sure to check out this album which was released August 23rd, and hopefully they will get out on the road.
