Sigurdur Rogvaldsson: Luna

Guitar and keyboards lead the way for this 4 piece instrumental outfit, and the catchy “Quarantine Hotel” kicks things off with a melody that sticks. The tricky rhythms used for “Trapped in a Maze”, as the song gets going the drums get kicking, and the keyboards underneath the guitar solo are excellent. The Rhodes keyboard has such character, and this track (and the entire album) features plenty of it. The more I listen, there is a richness to the recording, well thought out lines one minute, and maybe a bit more improv to the soloing the next. “Beyond” is my favorite track, when the band pulls back the Rhodes adds that atmospheric touch, yet the rhythm section maintains its punch driving the keyboard solo section. A great Rhodes solo is the highlight here, and I wish it went longer, what a great vibe. Then the guitar solo kicks in, damn, barn burner here folks, this track is on fire! “The Cabin” is laid back with that beautiful Rhodes and some fine bass work creating the atmosphere. “Nightfall” feels a bit more experimental in structure, but falls back in line with the unison lines. There is something about the atmosphere of this album I really like, “Breakthrough” has this dreamy intro, and even as the band comes in, it maintains that feel. There are some airy keyboard lines, while the guitar lines sit underneath, the instruments have a presence, their own space that allows them to stand out. A very impressive bass section is also featured here, and the song gains power as it moves to completion.

I am intrigued by this album, and it will require more listens to completely absorb, but there is something about it that feels immediate and present. Certain sections feel like the band is letting loose, while other moments are worked out. I like how the musicians work together, everyone has a chance to shine, yet it never feels like one instrument dominates. If you love guitar and Rhodes keyboards, you owe it to yourself to check this one out.
