Fast Train Union: Analog Outliers

Fast Train Union's third studio album, Analog Outliers, marks a triumphant return after a 12-year hiatus since their 2012 sophomore release II. The current lineup sees longstanding bassist Al Perrier being replaced by Michael Wetherilt, with the remaining quartet of John Wetherilt (guitars, background vocals), Sean Potvin (lead vocals), Paul DeMarinis (drums), and Al Fitzgerald (guitars, background vocals) keeping their spots. This latest offering is arguably their heaviest album to date, yet it diverges from the NWOBHM-inspired sound of its predecessor. Instead, Analog Outliers presents a dual personality:

The first half is a stellar revival of 80's hard rock, with infectious hooks and riffs that pay homage to the era's iconic sound. In contrast, the second half takes a darker, more profound, and complex turn, flirting with progressive rock elements and showcasing the band's elevated musical creativity and performance.

One of the standout elements of Analog Outliers is the exceptional guitar work, particularly the solos. These are not just mere embellishments, but carefully crafted enhancements that elevate the songs to new heights.

Standout tracks include "No Illusions", "Outliers", "World is Burning", "Calling Your Name", "Falling Down", "When You're Lonely", the instrumental guitar fest "Third Rail", and the album closer "It's Not a Game", which showcases the band's ability to craft memorable, hard-hitting songs.

While the album could benefit from slight trimming, as a couple of bonus tracks feel somewhat disconnected from the rest, Analog Outliers remains a solid addition to Fast Train Union's discography. The Canadian metallers have delivered a well-crafted, heavy, and melodic album that demands to be played loud.

With Analog Outliers, Fast Train Union cements their position as a force to be reckoned with in the hard rock scene, offering a refreshing blend of classic and modern elements that will appeal to fans of the genre. Cheers!

Fast Train Union: Analog Outliers
Posted by Michael Popke, SoT Staff Writer on 2024-11-26 02:11:21
My Score:

Whoa! As Analog Outliers is my first listening experience with Canada’s Fast Train Union, I did not anticipate leadoff track “Darkness” to open with a guitar solo ripped from the Scorpions’ songbook, nor did I expect the album to immediately land a spot on my best-of-2024 list. Yet, here we are.

Singer Sean Potvin has the perfect voice for this particular brand of familiar-yet-fresh North American hard rock, and he’s backed by a sturdy-as-a-steel-rail band that emphasizes both melody and muscle. Rockers like “Outliers” and “The Moment” will rattle in your brain even after you lay yourself down to sleep.

At the midway point of this 14-track CD, though Analog Outliers takes a left turn (but doesn’t go off the rails) and enters heavier, proggier territory. Think Triumph (or maybe Black Sabbath) meets Dream Theater, especially on “Falling Down,” “Stand” and “Union.” While the musical shift might feel jarring, it also proves Fast Train Union is not simply on a one track mission and suggests that this band doesn’t expect to slow down any time soon.

Fast Train Union took 12 years to follow up 2012’s Fast Train Union II with this tour de force; here’s hoping whatever comes next arrives much sooner.
