Tears: Falling Certainty

It's hard to knock a band so earnest and willing to please as is the group Tears with Falling Certainty, their debut EP. Apparently the band consists of four Greek musicians, now living and recording in England. These songs actually date back to 2000 and they show two sides of a band that are either a morbid Gothic rock band or your typical European progressive metal band, depending on the track. "Things Imaginary" opens proceedings on a mellow note with lead vocalist Mylonas Panagiotis crooning a Black Tape For a Blue Girl-ish verge of suicide lyric over an arrangement that consists mostly of keyboards and acoustic guitar. Then comes the band's three movement composition in "Self-Destruction", a reasonably good if slightly clumsy progmetal epic in the style of Symphony X or Angra. It's too bad that the song is hampered with demo-y production quality as there are some praiseworthy elements such as the fine keyboard and guitar interplay of Corkidas Constantinos and Matagos Yannis. But Yannis takes the lead vocals on "Part III" and frankly, he should stick to guitar playing. The EP is wrapped by the solid "Time Master" and a hidden short instrumental track. If Tears get themselves a decent producer and choose a more definitive musical direction, who knows where their talents might take them? Perhaps a band to watch.
