The Sweet eh? They still a thing? They are and have been pretty active here in the UK for the past few years, touring almost incessantly, changing members not called Andy Scott every few hours and occasionally putting a new album out. There's even a version of Sweet in America featuring members of the version put together by veteran and now deceased bassist Steve Priest which is in no way weird. Nope. No way. Not at all but let us focus on this, the band's apparently final album especially given that it's pretty good.
I say pretty good, whether it's a Sweet album entirely depends upon how much you like bands with original members so there's no getting away from the fact that this doesn't sound remotely like the 70s hit-making version of the band. What is on offer though is a selection of well-crafted, highly tuneful songs expertly sung by ex-Cats in Space man Paul Manzi. "Rising Up" is a glorious slice of AOR/melodic rock as is "Fire In My Heart". For some reason the wonderful "Defender" reminds me of Peter Cetera's "Wild Ways" crossed with Brian May and it is definitely safe to say that Full Circle keeps the quality high from start to finish. If this is Andy Scott and Sweet's swansong then this is a fine way to bow out. An unexpected 2024 high.
