Beasely, John: Returning To Forever (feat. Hr-Bigband & Frankfurt Radio Big Band)

To be honest, I am not a big fan of cover songs or tribute albums. Even when done well, I might give it a spin or two, and then never go back to it, always reaching for the original instead. But, there are exceptions to every rule, welcome to the latest exception!

John Beasley tackles the music of one of modern music’s greatest composers; Chick Corea. The music Corea wrote and recorded with Return to Forever are Fusion classics, genre defining songs. Beasley captures the essence of the music and succeeds in bringing a fresh take. This collaboration with hr-Bigband & Frankfurt Radio Big Band is nothing short of fantastic. The horns fit the music perfectly and add to the greatness of the material. All I needed to hear was the opening “Captain Senor Mouse� from Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy and I was hooked. For fans of Return to Forever, this is a must have. I have not been able to stop playing this since I first heard it, and it has inspired me to go back to the originals too. I will put on Beasley’s version of “Medieval Overture� or “No Mystery�, and then go listen to the RTF versions, and it leaves me with a smile on my face.

Beasley has been able to take timeless music and add something special to it, not an easy task. There are also videos on YouTube that are very impressive to watch. If you love Return to Forever, this is a must have, Bravo!
