If you’re in the mood for some offbeat, mysterious and dark musical meanderings, Jeff McLeod’s Not Good Enough is your jam. With song titles like “Nonaudience” and “Parasitic Fictions,” how can it not be. But nothing tops the exquisite “Faking” and “Quaalude Eggs,” two slabs of mindfuckery that showcase McLeod’s baritone vocals and penchant for making penetrating, unconventional “musicks” (his term).
None of the six tracks on this 31-minute disc outlast their welcome, as (again in McLeod’s words) “guitar, analog synths, dobro, mandolin, acoustic percussion, oddball sequencing methods and a fair amount of vocals all collide [into] psych-rock weirdness.”
The album's title is a misnomer, too, as this is definitely “good enough” -- as long as you understand what you’re getting into when you press “play.”
